Spin-outs, mergers, acquisitions and rebrands

A new name on the door usually means a new domain, a tenant split or merge, and a lot of email moving at once. We plan the technical side so that the only thing clients notice is the new name.

  • Spin-out

A team or division leaves to become its own entity. We carve its users, mailboxes and files out of the parent tenant into a new one, with a clean cutover date and a transition arrangement for anything still shared.

  • Merger

Two firms become one. We pick the surviving tenant (or build a new one), migrate the other firm into it, and unify devices, security policies and file structure so you don’t run two firms under one name.

  • Acquisition

You’ve bought a practice. We assess its environment before close where we can, then bring its people, devices and data under your standards on an agreed timeline.

  • Rebrand

Same firm, new name. New domain, new addresses, new signatures and website, with the old domain kept and forwarding so nothing gets lost in the change.

Tenant to tenant, done carefully

Moving between Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace tenants is where the detail lives.

  • Inventory of users, shared mailboxes, groups, calendars, files and permissions on both sides
  • Decisions on naming, structure and which settings survive, written down before anything moves
  • Pilot migration with a small group to measure timing and catch surprises
  • Bulk pre-stage of mail and files in the days before cutover
  • Domain moved and final delta pass overnight or over a weekend
  • Old addresses kept as aliases, with forwarding and monitoring in place
  • Devices re-enrolled into the new tenant with minimal desk-side time

Domain changes without lost email

The new domain needs a reputation. The old one needs protecting.

We set up the new domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC weeks before it carries client email, so it arrives in inboxes from the first message. The old domain stays registered, authenticated and forwarding, and we keep an eye on who sends as either of them.

Signatures, the website, letterhead templates and the domain in every system that sends notices on your behalf all change on the same day. We keep the list so nothing is still sending under the old name six months later.

Common questions

Will clients notice the migration?

They should only notice the new name. Old addresses keep working through aliases and forwarding for as long as you need, and cutover is scheduled outside working hours.

Can you merge a Microsoft 365 firm with a Google Workspace firm?

Yes. Cross-platform moves take more planning than like-for-like, mostly around calendars, shared files and permissions, but they’re routine. We support both platforms properly, so we don’t need to push you one way.

How long do we keep the old domain?

For years, not months. Keep it registered, keep its email authentication in place and forward its mail. A lapsed domain that used to belong to a professional firm is a gift to anyone wanting to impersonate you.
